Scavenger Hunt for Cystic Fibrosis

146
Junior NHS officers Matt Schneider, Fionna Cruz, Kelsey Schaffrin, Taylor Shelton, and Andrew Halaney pose in the hallway during the scavenger hunt.

At 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan 11, the lights at FHN will be turned off; plunging the school into darkness. This is in preparation for the NHS trivia scavenger hunt for Cystic Fibrosis. Only NHS members are allowed to participate, and the fee is $10.00.  NHS is hoping to raise $150-200 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

“They contacted me and asked if we would do a fundraiser for them; I agreed,” Donna Malkmus, FHN chemistry teacher, said.

This will be the first time that NHS will be fundraising for Cystic Fibrosis. The Junior officers came up with the idea for the scavenger hunt by sitting down and tossing around ideas. It will be a combination of 100 trivia questions and a three-legged race; similar to the Mole Day scavenger hunt that chemistry students participate in.

“I said trivia night, but we decided a scavenger hunt would be more fun, so we combined them,” Taylor Shelton, the Juniors NHS Historian said.

The event starts at 7:15 and competitors need to be back in the Commons by 8:00. While the officers are grading the score sheets there will be a social in the Commons, where students can eat and take pictures with friends while waiting to hear who got first place. The first place prize is a $15 gift card, second place gets a $10 gift card, and third place gets a $7 gift card.

“I think the scavenger hunt will be really fun because people get to go around FHN in the dark, and because NHS is known for its smarts and it’s a competition because everyone wants to know who’s best.” said Taylor.

Malkmus and the NHS officers hope this will be a lasting tradition, and that people realize there are fun ways to fundraise.
