High Hopes Turn Into Disappointments

During the weekend through the 15-17 of February, a couple of  wrestlers were chosen to be in the State Championship Tournament. The tournament was held in the Mizzou Arena. The four Knights that were chosen to go compete with the top wrestlers in the state of Missouri was, Seniors Tyler Smith, Jeremiah Reed, Shawn Wielms, and Sophomore Sam Ritchie. Smith was the only one to place in the State Tournament, bringing home a 5th place medal, one place better than last year. This makes FHN the only school in Missouri to have a placer in every year of the schools existence.”I think Tyler did as good as he could have done.” 12th year varsity coach Chris Brown said. “I would have liked to see Sam win some matches ,

Wielms wrestled as good as he could have done with one arm (Wielms sufferd from a torn labrum earlier in the season), and Jeremiah wrestled great, he just could not get the calls he needed to win. He lost against the champ and the third place winner of his weight class.”

According to coaches and players this was the year to make an impact in the State tournament. Three of the four wrestlers that made it to state were seniors. If the knights want to have as many returning wrestlers as they had last year they will have to work hard and prove themselves. None of the wrestlers want to be the one to not carry on the tradition of having a placer every year.

“I fell short of my goals of getting a state medal, but i’m going to workout and wrestle over the summer to make sure I accomplish my goal for next year” Sophomore Sam Ritche said.
