The JV girls soccer team had their first game at Howell on March 18. They lost the first game in the GACs tournament against Holt with a final score of 0-1. Originally the game was scheduled to be at FHN, but the rain caused it to be moved to Holt’s turf field.

“We did some things that were okay. We couldn’t capitalize on the numerous chances we made. There were some positives that we can build on and go forward with.  So I mean things to work on, but more positives than negatives,” Zachary Fettig, JV girls soccer coach, said.

FHN had possession of the ball the majority of the time during the first half. They stayed on Holt’s half of the field for the most part leaving Holt to come on there side only 3 or 4 times. The referee remarked “I’m surprised you girls haven’t got one in yet.”

“Losing to a team we dominated the whole game was the worst part,we lost it at the end,” Marissa Watkins, a sophomore on JV, said.

Holt had one shot on goalie, Alexis Tainter, during the first half. FHN had numerous shots on goal that couldn’t seem to make it in. FHN dominated the first half, but they ended 0-0 tying them up with Holt at half time.

“We need to work on our shooting because we couldn’t seem to find the back of the net,” Danielle Dagenais, a junior on JV, said.

During the second half both teams were struggling to get a goal to avoid going into penalty kicks. Holt’s coach remarked “Come on ladies, their keeper’s getting bored”. Holt’s forward broke down the field in the last 15 seconds and shot a goal right into the left corner.

“We were the better team we just came out short in the end,” Dagenais said.

Everyone went still and silent on the bench. After a moment of disbelief the girls rushed to set up and get a goal. Shouts of encouragement came from the bench and stands. The game ended shortly after with a score of 1-0 Holt.

“We still got a lot of work to do, but it’s very early and like I said we did some things that were very well for this early in the season, but we still got a long way to go to meet our full potential,” Fettig said.
