Varsity Boys’ Tennis Prepares for Match Against McCluer

Thursday, Mar. 28, Varsity Boys’ Tennis will participate in their first match of the season against McCluer High School. The meet will take place at the tennis courts at McCluer and the match is free to anyone who would like to attend.

Because of the the recent snow storm, the team has had to reschedule many of their matches. What was set to be their fifth match has now turned into their first one. This puts them behind most other schools.

“If we can’t have the match because of the snow, we will try to move it to North. The boys stayed after school today [Tues.] to shovel the snow off of the courts, in preparation for the upcoming matches,” coach Kate Kleiber said.

Team members have been preparing for weeks for this match and are excited to finally get the season started.  Despite the cold weather, the team continues to practice by going to indoor courts rented by coach Kleiber.

“I have vigorously been conditioning in the cold of winter every day, and have been running a lot of bleachers,” senior Joel Payne said.

Although the team has been set back a few matches compared to the other schools, members believe they still have a strong chance at winning despite the fact McCluer has had more matches to prepare this season.

“I believe we have a very good chance at winning. We have a strong dedicated team. We only lost one senior, so most of us know what we are doing,” junior Raymond Che said.

This year the team only lost one Varsity player so members believe they will excel this season with most members having previous Tennis experience.

“I think we will do very well this season, our only big competition is Howell High,” Che said. “We had two guys go to state last year so we really hope to beat that.”

Sophomore Matt Dunn is anxious to get the season started and off to a good start.

“I am excited to get to play with my team and working hard with them every match,” Dunn said.
