Morgan May Signs with Navy

Senior Morgan May was sworn in to the Navy on March 22. This will start her career as an Information Systems Technician for the Navy. She has a long road ahead of her before she’s official. First, she will leave for bootcamp in Chicago on August 19 for two months, then from there she will go straight to a school in Florida for 6 months in Pensacola, FL. Even with the path ahead May is very excited for her future, although it was a difficult decision to make.

“It was hard to choose between a scholarship and the Navy,” said May. May had a $14,000 scholarship offer to Culver Stockton for track and pole vaulting. “I ended up choosing the Navy because it just seemed like the best option, and it fit me really well.”

So with her future with the Navy, being an Information Systems Technician she will mostly be working with computers. A tech usually works with the Navy’s global satellite telecommunications systems, mainframe computers, and works on local and wide area networks. After the Navy, May still has big plans for the future.

“I don’t know if I will re-enlist, it just depends on how much I like the job.”said May when asked about her future in the Navy. Although there is a chance that she won’t continue in the Navy, May said, “I would want to use the GI bill to get my masters.” This way she would have something to fall back on, and end up getting a good education for whatever she decides to do.

It ran in the family for her to go in the Armed Forces. May’s two grandpas and aunt were in the Army. Also a family friend who is in the Navy told her to join, because she loves it in the Navy. All of this inspired her to enlist and take on this mission.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the world.” said May. Although it is frightening to some to take on your life in this new direction, May said, “I can’t wait, it’s going to be exciting; also I get the chance to meet so many new people.”
