FHN’s Scholar Bowl competed with 15 other schools at their last competition, which took place on Tuesday Nov. 4 at Timberland High School. The team did not win any of their rounds, resulting in a disappointing loss. The next competition will take place on Tuesday. Nov. 19 at Holt High School.
“We generally do pretty okay,” sophomore Zoe Lawson said. “Not epically great, but not bad. We should improve, hopefully.”
Sponsored by Jon Travis, Scholar Bowl is much like Jeopardy or a trivia night, with the exception that it’s on a competitive level. For each round, teams of four students faces off against one other school at a time. Much like a game show, there are buzzers that the competitors push to answer the question, and it is a matter of who answers the fastest. There are about 50 questions per round, about 20 of which have bonuses. Questions fall under different categories such as Math, English, Computation, and Miscellaneous.
“I think we can improve if we start practicing more and getting people to specialize in certain areas of knowledge,” senior Matt Schneider said. “We have some good new people, and we have a chance once more people get familiar with the style of questioning.”
Scholar Bowl practices every Monday after school, and competitions are every couple of weeks on Tuesdays. Their next practice is Monday, Nov. 11. It goes on the length of the school year, and seldom do students make it to every competition.
“We didn’t have our best team at the last competition, but we’re going into our next competition underestimated, which is a good thing,” junior Ashleigh Jenkins said.
