Weekly Wyer: King Krule (Artist to Check Out)

With his upcoming US tour and a feature on Conan O’Brien’s show earlier this November, King Krule (Archy Marshall), a 19 year old redhead from the UK is about to blow up. Earlier this year, he released his debut album, 6

Feet Beneath the Moon, a 14 track album that contains a mixture of great percussion and ominous guitars over his raspy, monotone, dramatic voice.  His music has a great jazzy vibe, almost like something you’d expect from an artist like Burial or others who give off a broken, downtempo sound. The beats and background instruments flow so well with his unique voice, and they create a sound that’s very uncommon. I haven’t heard anything like his music before. It’s just an odd mixture of hollow sounds with a bleak voice that just clicks. On December 3, he will embark on his first full length US tour, which will stop in Chicago (which is somewhat near St. Louis).

Unfortunately, his discography isn’t that deep. He has one EP and one album, but he’s such a young artist, so hopefully new music can be expected from him relatively soon. I definitely recommend checking him out, as his debut album is one of my favorites from 2013. If you don’t want to take the time to listen to one of his albums, I recommend listening to a few select songs like “A Lizard State,” “Easy Easy,” or “The Noose of Jah City.” Overall, Krule is something like you’ve never heard before, and I highly suggest checking him out. Here’s a clip of one of his performances shot by Chicago filmmaker Sean Phazes.
