Mock Rock Cancelled

Mock Rock, FHN’s annual talent show, usually showcasing students lip-syncing, was cancelled yesterday morning by Student Council sponsors Jani Wilkens, Shelly Parks and President Rowan Pugh. They decided to cancel the event because of groups dropping out of the show.

“We almost didn’t start the planning of the show because we didn’t have enough acts,” sponsor Jani Wilkens said. “Mock rock is something that’s special to me because it was an event at my own high school, and years ago I told the student council kids about it, and it became a tradition, and that was really cool for me.”

StuCo officers had decided they needed at least 7 acts to perform, and after two groups cancelled, they had to cut the show. The two acts that cancelled had planned on performing “All I want for Christmas is you” by Mariah Carey and the “Pitch Perfect Finale” from the movie Pitch Perfect. StuCo hadn’t been informed of the cancellations until this morning during their meeting in second hour, and had to quickly make a decision.

“It’s my senior year, so it would’ve been cool to see the show for the first time,” senior Wyatt Eagen said. “I was going to go, and I’m sad because it would’ve been fun.”

Originally the acts were to consist of “YOLO” by Lonely Island, “Nothing suits me like a suit” from How I Met Your Mother, “What Does the Fox Say” by Ylvis, and other songs. The winner was to be decided by a panel of three teacher judges, and the grand prize was $100, cash.

“I feel bad because part of the reason that the show was cancelled was my group dropping out, but we just didn’t have enough time to prepare for the show.” senior Kelsey Schaffrin said.

StuCo has sponsored Mock Rock for eight years. This is the first year it has been cancelled. Canceling the show won’t leave StuCo out money, but it has left some performers disappointed.

“It’s kind of a relief since it was so rushed, because it wasn’t advertised enough, and we only had two weeks to prepare.” junior Stone Birkner said. “but it’s also very sad since we won’t get to perform at all.”
