Sophomore NHS met before school in Com. 1 on Tuesday morning to vote for class representatives. Megan Mitchell, Pratyush Sontha, and Jamie Hetlage ran unopposed for vice president, treasurer, and historian, respectively. Mensur Koso was elected president, and Teresa Wooten became the new secretary.

“Ultimately, I felt that NHS needed someone who was willing to work hard and keep everyone on task to keep the reputation of NHS going,” Koso said. “I also wanted to start demonstrating my abilities as a leader. I’ve been a leader in small groups or something informal. This was my first shot at bringing all my experience to the big table and showing the world who I was and what I’m willing to do to change it.”

The meeting began when the NHS members signed in, while some of the candidates passed out candy and cookies to encourage support. After everyone settled in, each of the candidates gave self-promoting speeches. 

“I want to have a role in the club and gain leadership experience,” Wooten said. “I wasn’t aware that we were supposed to have a two to three minute speech, so I had to do it on the spot.”

The students were given ballots to vote for the candidate they wanted to win, and ended the meeting with the newly elected officers presenting upcoming service opportunities.

“I think the officers people elected are definitely good choices,” sophomore NHS member Emily Wilson said. “They seem like they’re really dedicated, and I think they’ll really contribute a lot of ideas that will help the society grow and improve, which is great.”
