Printmaking II Makes T-Shirts

(Multimedia Package by Bri Hurst and Alex Boiles)

Michael Leistner’s Printmaking II Class worked on silk screening on May 19.The class makes t-shirts with their own designs all year round and learns the art of silk screening.

Leistner’s classes were working on all the stages of silk screening. Some students were printing designs, some were stretching silk across their silk frame, and some were creating their new designs.

According to Leistner, a student will pick a design off of the computer, then print their design on a piece of vellum paper. After that, they put silk into their silk frames and stretch it across by hammering it into the frames gaps.

“I like this class because we make designs for t-shirts,” junior Kaidyn Kerr said.

When students have their silk screens ready, they will put their vellum paper onto the screen and spread it with photo emulsion. Photo emulsion is a green chemical that is light sensitive that has to sit in the dark to activate the design onto the silk.

Once the photo emulsion has dried, students take their t-shirts and their silk screen and paint ink onto the the shirt through the silk screen. The ink automatically prints the outline of their designs.

After the paint ink is printed on the shirt, then the silk is taken off the frame for a new project to made. Leistner’s students all know this process very well and know exactly why they wanted to take his class.

“I wanted to take this class because I knew I get to make T-shirts and I like to make my own designs,” senior Olivia Olsen said.
