Thomas Officer’s Boy Scout Project on FHN’s Rock Mural

Senior Thomas Officer relandscaped the rocks on stadium hill that spell out FHN. He did this for a Boy Scout’s community service project which accomplishes one of the steps to becoming an Eagle Scout.

“I thought it was cool that someone was finally doing something about that rock mural because it was looking so run down,” boy scout and FHN senior Devon Benton said.

Over fall break Officer gathered about 25 to 30 volunteers together to help him. Since Officer was the leader of the project he bought the rocks and lumber that was needed with the money that was donated to him by the VFW Hall. The district arranged for the old rocks to be cleared away so they could get to work.

“The whole leadership thing is something I really get out of it,” Officer said. “Seeing the project from beginning to end and seeing the completion I really like being in charge of that and getting to work with everyone and forming that team that’s going to see everything though.”

There’s been other Boy Scout projects done to benefit our school in previous years, for example the wooden benches in front of the gym lobby. Some kind of bench or landscaping project is common for these community service projects. Officer’s project broke away from the typical project according to him.

“I think it’s cool that Thomas found a project that is going to last a long time,” boy scout and FHN senior Collin Witte said. “Plus it’s at our school, so he can see the final product everyday and when he visits later in life.”

Officer got the idea from his mother when she pointed out to him that the rock mural wasn’t looking too good at a football game. He took off with the idea and got it approved by his superiors and the school.

“I wasn’t sure that that’s what I really wanted to do,” Officer said. “I wanted to do something that was going to last a little bit longer and have a bigger impact. I looked around and that was the biggest thing that came up and the more I thought about it the more I liked it so that’s what I did.”
