Mock Rock Returns at Later Date

On Friday, Jan. 9, StuCo will be hosting Mock Rock in the auditorium at FHN. Student council organizes Mock Rock for the student body to participate in and come to watch.

“The idea actually came with me when I started working here,” StuCo sponsor Jani Wilkens said, “When I was in high school up in Michigan, my school’s event that nobody ever wanted to miss was a Mock Rock, and so I told students about it here years ago, and for awhile, nobody really seemed to think it was all that exciting. And then one year, I showed them the video of it that I was in and they thought it was hysterical and were like ‘lets do it!’ So we’ve been doing it ever since then.”

Mock rock is a lip syncing contest that all students can compete in. They have to choose a song that has appropriate lyrics for school and then they practice lip-syncing and usually dancing to the particular song. Some people get more dressed up than others, and then they come and compete while teachers and students judge them. The winning teams get cash prizes.

“It really depends on our ticket sales, but typically we give out $150 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place,” Wilkens said, “If we have lower attendance, we sometimes lower the cash prizes.”

Last year, Mock Rock was cancelled due to a lack of interest.  The original date of Mock Rock was Nov. 14, however, the date got pushed back because StuCo was focused on other events, such as Trick or Treat Street. Another reason is that seniors wanted to make sure that FHN had a Mock Rock this year.

“Last year we didn’t do Mock Rock because we didn’t have enough students interested in it, and the students who were organizing it were a little bit behind on getting things going, so we ended up canceling it,” Wilkens said. “But prior to that, we’ve probably been doing it for about 6-7 years straight.”
