Two Girls Swimming Meets Canceled this Week

canceled. The first meet being canceled because of a scheduling conflict, while at the second meet the pool at Hazelwood Central was green, making it not suitable for swimming.

“It mostly just causes confusion,” Girls Swimming Coach William Crow said. “We just found out today [Jan. 6] that the meet tonight was canceled. Now we’ve had to reschedule buses, and parents may have to come pick up their kids, so they may have had to take off work. It’s a pain.”

With this week now free of meets, there is a lot more time for the team to practice. This practice time will allow the girls a great opportunity to improve themselves and create a immense sense of monotony for both the coaches and the entire team.

“The cancellations mostly just change what we were going to do this week,” Crow said. “We would spend this week preparing for the meets, but now we’re going to have to practice all week. It’s alright, but it’s not as much fun for the girls.”

Among those trying to improve are freshman and All-State hopeful Erin Stock. She participates in both the 200m individual medley and the 100m butterfly events, and she is hoping to improve and qualify for State in the 100m butterfly. In order to qualify for State in the 100m butterfly, one must finish the event with a time of 1 min, 2.99 sec. Stock’s current time in the event is 1 min, 3.03 sec.

“I don’t think the cancellations have had too much of an effect,” Stock said. “Right now, I’m just trying to improve and qualify for State. This week off is giving me a chance to give my shoulders a rest.”

The team’s next meet will be a tri-meet against Howell High and Timberland at the St. Peters Rec-Plex on Tuesday, Jan. 13. This is one meet that the coaches have had circled on their calendars for a long time.

“The meet coming up against Howell and Timberland is going to be a big one,” Crow said. “We’re going to have a hard time beating Howell, but the competition will provide good opportunities for everyone, and it will give Erin a good chance to try to qualify for State.”
