Girls Soccer Team to be Honored at Basketball Game Friday

This Friday, Jan. 17, the Varsity Girls’ Soccer team will be honored at halftime of the Varsity Boys’

Basketball game at 7:00 p.m. They will be receiving this honor because of their outstanding season last year in which they reached the Final Four of the State Championship Tournament.

“I think it’s really neat for the school to be able to recognize our accomplishments,” senior and Girls’ Soccer Captain Carli Bond said. “We worked really hard, and I think we can do it again. I’m glad the school is recognizing how hard we worked to get where we did.”

The girls soccer team defeated Pattonville High School and Seckman High School in the first and second rounds of the tournament, respectively. They then lost their Final Four matchup to the eventual winners, St. Joseph’s Academy, followed by a loss to Jefferson City in the third-place game. Counting both the regular season and the postseason, the team finished with a record of 17-8-1, whereas in the previous season in which they did not make the State Championship Tournament.

“We’re looking to to show recognition for the girls’ great season last year,” Activities Director Mike Janes said. “It’s a good opportunity for more kids to come to the basketball game. We hope to get a large student section out to support the basketball team and to get support for the girls’ upcoming season.”

As Janes said, this game is not only a great opportunity for the FHN student body to show their support for the girls soccer team, but it’s also a chance to show support  and lift the spirits of the less-than-stellar boys basketball team, with their 5-6 record so far this season. The real focus, though, will be at halftime when the girls soccer team will be acknowledged and appreciated for all of their hard work and dedication.

“It’s really nice to see the school acknowledge this great accomplishment,” Assistant Girls’ Soccer Coach Larry Scheller said. “Now’s a good time [for this recognition]. It’s a good kick-off to show everyone where we’ve been and where we’re going.”

Not only was last season great, but the team is poised to make another run at the State Tournament this year. While the team did lose quite a few seniors, they will make up for it with plenty of younger players that will take over and continue the newly-established winning tradition of girls soccer at North.

“Last season was a great season,” Scheller said. “It takes a lot of hard work and a lot of luck to make it to the State Tournament, let alone the Final Four. I hope the team can do it again this year. We lost several significant players, but the girls from the senior class, the junior class and the other, younger classes this year should be able to step up and do well for us.”
