Overlook of FCCLA’s Year and Upcoming Events

Often, there are clubs that are doing super cool things that the student body doesn’t really know anything about, FCCLA is one of these clubs. FCCLA stands for Family, Career, and Community leaders of America.

“I love seeing all the cute little couples buy heart-o-grams for each other.” junior Diana Ostrovskiy said.

The club raises money to fund their projects by selling Boo Grams around Halloween and Heart-O-Grams around Valentine’s Day. These grams were sold in the commons during lunches and were available to anyone at North. They were a generic template that left room for a personal message and cost 50 cents.

“Going and playing Bingo with the elementary school kids was my favorite.” junior Karley McCarthy said.

The club revolves around different community service projects and activities. They do things like visit elementary schools, mostly Henderson, to speak to the kids about health and safety. After third grade classes at Henderson completed their nutrition unit, members of FCCLA went to the school to play Bingo with them. They provided them with healthy snacks to choose from. The members were each assigned a third grade class to go and play with. This year the members brought candy and trick or treat safety flyers to Henderson students before Halloween. They used a flyer from previous years and added their own personal tips to the list. They also do things like discuss bicycle helmet safety. The main goal is to bring safety hazards to the attention of younger kids and make them aware of the dangers of certain everyday activities like what they eat, and how they prevent injury.

“We’re thinking about making dog treats to give to the dogs at the pound soon and that’s probably what I’m looking forward to the most.” junior Madi Oostendorp said.

The group meets about once a month for 30 minutes to an hour after school in Mrs.Just’s room. She always has the meeting dates posted outside of her room, and anyone is welcome to join the club at any time. All they have to do is talk to Mrs.Just and start attending the meetings. At their next meeting they’ll be making plans for the rest of the year that will most likely involve the Humane Society.

“Hopefully we can do more to gain members next year.” junior Karley McCarthy said.
