FHN Begins EOC Testing

EOC Schedule

With the end of the year just around the corner, FHN is beginning the annual round of EOC testing. The EOC’s, short for “end-of-course” exams, are set to begin on April 13 and take place until April 23.

“EOC’s are just standardized tests to see what you’ve learned in the course throughout the year,” sophomore Andrew Santel said.

To allow appropriate time for test takers, FHN will undergo block scheduling through the aforementioned, with April 17 being the only normal schedule. During block scheduling, students only go to four classes a day, but with each class being extended as long as two hours. There will also be four homeroom periods during the two weeks, two lasting 35 minutes and the other two lasting an hour and a half.

“I think block scheduling is a great idea to give classes more testing time,” sophomore Kyle Rohlfing said. “It’s nice that you don’t have to visit the same classes every day.”

The classes testing this year are English II, Government, Biology, Algebra I and Algebra II. The exams are used by the state to determine the knowledge and skills gained by students throughout the course, allowing the curriculum of the class to be adjusted if needed.

“EOC’s are an important tool to see what students have learned,” English teacher Kristen DiCarlo said. “It’s also used to see what students haven’t learned, so the curriculum can be reevaluated if necessary.”

Despite playing such an important role in the education process, many students find EOC’s to be additional stress in the classroom due to the fact that they must also complete final exams at the end of the year. However, some students have no concerns about EOC’s and simply want to get them out of the way.

“I’m just ready to get them over with,” Rohlfing said. “I’m not worried about the exams at all because I feel like I’m prepared.”
