A safe place for writers can to talk to other writers, share their work and develop their passion for writing. This is what English teacher Jani Wilkens hopes the new writers guild club will entail. Thursday, Aug. 27 was the club’s first meeting where sponsor Wilkens, and creator sophomore Aaron Dupske talked to the group about what the club would entail.

“Getting more people really seeing writing as a possible career, and a passion,” said Wilkens. “And giving people the opportunity to share work with each other.”

The club will start meeting every other Monday starting Sept. 14. In the club writers will be able to participate in workshops to learn other styles of writing from other club members. They will also have certain members take on the role of editors, so members can have peers edit their work in order to improve it. Outside of meetings the club is talking to Picasso’s on main street about doing a poetry night so students can share some of their work outside of their fellow members.

“My favorite style of writing is poetry,” said Dupske. “I like doing things where it is just open word, it’s just you, where you just vent write.”

Club members are excited to see where this new club goes. Some who already had a passion for writing are anticipating exploring writing styles, and seeing some of  their peers work, while working on their own.

“I am most excited for seeing other writers’ styles and developing my own style,” said senior Rachel Juhlin.

Wilkens is excited to see how this club forms as a student-run type of group. She has thought about having a club like this one before, and is glad it is coming to light this year.

“Many students ask if there is a creative writing two,” said Wilkens. “So something to kind of push them even farther in their writing, and have opportunities submit to contests. So it is kind of funny that I had already been kicking that around in my mind.”
