Wrestlers of Years Past Recognized at Induction Ceremony

hofOn Jan. 21, the FHN activites committee invited the 1990-1991 varsity wrestling team and coaches to be inducted into the Hall of Fame previously seen in the auditorium lobby outside the gym. Past inductee and three-time state champion Jason Sexton also attended the induction ceremony in support of the team.

“I think they deserve it because they were the first state championship team that the school had,” wrestling coach Chris Brown said. “They had several guys that qualified to the state tournament and beat out a couple other really good teams in the state that year.”

In order to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, an inductee may be a community member, a coach, or a former player or graduate of five years from FHN. The inductees accomplishments are then reviewed by the committee to be admitted into the hall of fame. The hall of fame committee consists of an administrator, a few coaches and the booster club and they vote on it. This specific induction was voted in on two years ago.

“Considering being our first state championship team, which is quite an accomplishment,” Activities Director Mike Janes said. “We’ve only have two state championships in our history of 30 years and I think it’s always a nice thing to bring those people back to kind of relive what they were, meet and greet their old teammates and I think it’s a nice community event.

At the ceremony, Brown and head principal Andy Downs presented the players with a plaque that had a team picture with all the names and accomplishments. Their plaque also goes onto the Hall of Fame wall outside the auditorium. Mrs. Just’s culinary class prepared food for all inductees and their families.

“As each one of them went up it was cool seeing all of the best wrestlers in this school all at once,” junior Eric Mayfield said. “They all worked very hard to achieve what they wanted to.”
