So it’s your first year of high school. I’m sure you’re feeling a little nervous. Let me be the first to tell you, it’s not as bad as you think.

Yes, the school is huge, especially compared to your middle school, but you’ll be navigating it flawlessly before you know it. In the meantime, don’t be afraid to ask for help. I know it’s scary to walk up to an older student and ask them where your class is, but they’ve all been freshman before and they know what it’s like to be in your shoes. They’ll be plenty willing to direct you.

Don’t be afraid to talk to your teachers when you need help either. They are there to help you, and they want to see you succeed. It’s also just great to talk to some of your teachers because you’ll find you’ll get along with some pretty great ones.  Sure, you’ll probably have a few teachers you aren’t fond of, but there are a lot of amazing teachers at FHN that you will absolutely love.

Last bit of advice, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Join clubs, talk to new people, it’s a really rewarding experience. I was definitely the shy and quiet kid my freshman year and my only regret from high school is that I didn’t involve myself in much of anything until my senior year. After joining NHS and publications and just talking to people more, I’ve made so many friendships with so many different people. I wish I had done that sooner, so my advice to you is to do as much as you can as early as you can.

Don’t be afraid of high school. It’s easier than you think, and you will make so fun many memories over the years.
