FHN Representatives Bring Back Leadership Qualities to Their Team

The formula to a perfect team and attitude for the season is being able to work as a team and be able to lead and guide the team through the hardships. For the girls basketball team, this is what they have worked on in the off-season.

Students from FHN, FHC and Francis Howell participate in team building games during the recent leadership conference held at FHN.

“The conference we attended was fun, I learned a lot,” sophomore Maddie Stock. “I’m going to take the things I learned from the conference and being on the leadership council and apply it to basketball so I can help lead my team.”

The most recent conference was held at FHN and hosted FHC and FHHS. The students participated in different activities together to learn sportsmanship amongst the schools. The conference also had an array of speakers that came in and spoke about their experiences in a leadership role and what they learned from it, whether it was good or bad, and how they improved the next time they were in that situation.

“We learned that there are more things you gain by playing sports besides the wins and losses,” junior Maggie Hillman said. “You gain good communication skills and build strong relationships. I can use this in daily life when communicating with my classmates and even with coworkers later on in life.”

Tryouts for winter sports start Oct. 31.  This includes boys’ and girls’ basketball, girls’ swim and wrestling. The leadership council is trying to spread the good sportsmanship throughout their teams. FHN was recently recognized as a MSHSAA leadership school. The process for this award includes having an an activities council, being involved in community outreach and having sportsmanship and leadership throughout the school and sports.

“Leadership is important to start the domino effect of good actions,” sophomore Corinne Stevens said.
