The air was crisp. Senior Brianna Schmidt could feel the cool breeze blowing on her skin as she lined up her drive for the first hole on October 2 in Warrenton.

“It was sad, realizing that was my last time playing.” Schmidt said. “I mean it was a good swing, it was a good drive. It was sad thinking about it, so I tried not to think about it.”

The girls’ golf team faced off against 50 other girls from schools like Marquette, Jefferson City, and Fort Zumwalt West. Due to sickness and a 102 degree fever, Schmidt felt she wasn’t able to play to her potential. As well as her sickness, the course didn’t allow her to display her strong suits.

“Usually I like straight holes,” Schmidt said. “There was a lot of doglegs [golf hole that bends to the left] and I couldn’t drive most of the holes because there were turns, so I would just go out of bounds. It made me short on the holes, so I wasn’t on my play. It was difficult for me because it wasn’t my type of play.”

Although she is upset she didn’t make the cut-off, Schmidt is happy for her teammate, Jessica Qian, who was able to advance onto State.

“[My favorite moment was] After it was all over and realizing that Jessica made it to State,” Schmidt said. “When they were going over scores, the cutoff was 88 and she got an 84. And, I’m proud that Witthaus is going to State, he seemed excited.”
