10. Howell North Hands Vikings First Loss of Season in Thrilling Overtime Victory

Entering Tuesday’s critical rivalry match with the Francis Howell Vikings, the varsity girls soccer team was on a three game losing streak with all three losses coming against fellow GAC South teams. Now the Lady Knights were tasked with taking on a Vikings team that was undefeated at 6-0 and had conceded just one goal on the season.

Howell North knew that they needed a strong performance from the back and goalkeeper Caty Arnold if they wanted to take down their division-leading rivals. Not only did both Arnold and the defense do this for the Knights, but they completely shut down the high-powered Vikings offense.

9. Seniors Welcome Freshmen to Varsity Soccer Team

The spring sports season has finally arrived and with it, the beginning of the girls soccer season. The coaches were put into a rough situation after tryouts due to the low turnout and were forced to cut the freshmen team. Fortunately, with the incoming players showing some promise, three freshmen, Brynna Rutherford, Courtney Area and Julia Kristensen were able to make the varsity team.

“I was really nervous at the beginning, because I didn’t know how I was going to play with the other girls, but I’m super excited because I’ve become really good friends with everyone and I hope we get to grow and develop as a team,” said Rutherford.

8. Senior Sam Grace is One of the Top Pitchers in the State of Missouri

Thirteen years ago, senior Sam Grace found a passion for baseball that has taken him farther than he ever expected throughout his baseball career. According to Prep Baseball Report, Grace is ranked the eleventh pitcher in the state of Missouri right now, pitching a 94 mph fastball. Most high school pitchers pitch mid to low 80s. On average, major league baseball players pitch between 95 mph to 105 mph fastballs.

“I think Sam can go as far as he wants to go with baseball,” Mike Freedline, varsity assistant baseball coach, said. “I think he can make it to the big leagues with his arm. He is very dedicated to the sport.”

7. Lady Knights Head Into Season with New Faces but Similar Expectations

One of the more successful programs at Francis Howell North, the girls soccer team’s 2018 campaign is set to kick off in less than one week. From the players to the coaches, there’s excitement flowing through the entire team to not just get the season underway, but to continue adding on to the rich history of the program. This history includes phenomenal records such as the Lady Knights having double-digit wins in every season since 2007, and victories in tournaments ranging from districts to even state.

With such prosperity in recent years, Howell North enters the new season with high expectations. To fulfill these expectations, assistant coach Larry Scheller understands that his team must embrace the Lady Knights’ winning culture.

“Every year we talk about how successful our program has been,” Scheller said. “Kids need to know and take pride in our program so they’re not just playing for themselves but playing for the program and their teammates and the people who have played here in the past.”
