The FHN Lady Knights basketball team will be competing in the annual Pink Ribbon game on February 8 against Francis Howell High. This will be the 11th year for the event.

The event is immensely different from an ordinary game because the Pink Ribbon game is always played as a charity game to raise money for cancer research. Senior team member Maddie Stock feels a personal connection to the cause.

“My mother passed away from cancer last March,” Stock said. “My uncle also passed away from cancer about a year ago. This event means a lot to me and my family.”

The proceeds from the event this year will go to Siteman Cancer Center, likely to be used for their Discovery Fund.  The Discovery Fund is used at the discretion of the board in order to fund new and innovative research projects. Executive Director of Development at Siteman Cancer Center Courtney Weeks describes these types of events as the difference in cancer research.

“It’s incredible,” Weeks said. “It’s amazing to see a community come together to promote the future of cancer research. It’s really true that every dollar makes a difference.”

This game has become a rich history in FHN sports by turning out large crowds and by creating an energetic atmosphere of community. Everyone can tell that this game means so much more than the score posted in lights when the clock hits zero.

“It’s more than a game, that’s for sure,” Stock said. “It illustrates that larger in meaning in sports that there’s much more to life than whatever happens on the court. We have the chance to make a real difference.”
