On Tuesday March 26, the girls soccer team went up against the FHC Spartans in a rematch of last year’s district championship game. Both teams entered the match up with a combined zero losses. While the season is still early for both seasons, every win counts when playing district opponents.

“To be honest, we didn’t have a lot of confidence coming into the game,” Sophomore Brynna Rutherford said. “We have heard a lot about their players and how good they are. But as it went deeper into the game I think it really changed.”

The Knights got out to an early lead off the bat, as Rutherford was able to score in the third minute on a wide open goal. After a goal by senior Abbie Miller in minute 34, in which she scorched the ball into the back of the net after a free kick by Bria Hamilton, the Knights were up 2-0 heading into the second half of play.

“After that first half, we were feeling that we had a good chance of winning,” Rutherford said. “The team just had a better mentality after that and we put in a lot more effort.”

Throughout the final 30 minutes, the game was pretty even, with both team’s defense shining and preventing the ball from heading into the back of the net. But as the clock showed that the game had 10 minutes left, Central bumped up their offense. After a header by Central midfielder Jay Viola, the Spartans went on an all-out attack, trying to get another goal before the final buzzer to force overtime. However, despite their best efforts, the Knights were able to hold on to the lead to win the game 2-1. The Knights

“I think if we try to stay undefeated, it will really build up for our district games along with other important games,” Rutherford said.
