After coming inside from playing basketball with her dad for a few hours, Brianna Wortman realized she didn’t want to only play the sport for fun. Pretty soon, she was playing CYC basketball every year from fourth grade to eighth grade. When freshman year of high school came around, she made the varsity team.

“It was pretty exciting that I made varsity as a freshman,” Wortman said. “It also motivated me to practice a lot and reach my full potential as a player.”

Wortman also tried out for volleyball this past fall season and made the varsity volleyball team as well. She believes her skill improvement during that season helped her prepare for the basketball season.

“I have a really high vertical from volleyball so it helps me with the layups and jump balls,” Wortman said. “We also did sprints for volleyball which will help me sprint back when switching to defense on the court.”

Wortman played on the varsity volleyball team with Isabelle Delarue and Cate Hahn, both of which play on the varsity basketball team with her. She enjoys playing with them and it made it easier to join the team because she not only knew two of the players, but had already played a sport with them.

“Bri has great sportsmanship on the court,” Delarue said. “She is always pushing me to do better and is always there for me when I’m down. I’m really looking forward to this basketball season with her.”

Basketball practice is held after school everyday from 2:30 to 5 p.m.. However, Wortman’s sports schedule doesn’t end there. On Mondays and Wednesdays, she has club practice at 7:00 p.m.. Due to this packed schedule, Wortman is sure to get her homework done right when she gets home from basketball.

“Honestly, I have a pretty busy schedule but I don’t get much homework as a freshman and I’m free most weekends so I can keep up with friends, school, and sports for the most part,” Wortman said.
