2020 has been a tumultuous year – full of fear and hope, violence and peace. There was the civil rights movement that gained speed in the summer, sharing support for racial justice and the Black Lives Matter movement, and the presidential election which sparked the debate of various beliefs and political stances. Many people have taken to social media to show support for topics they’re passionate about, and one of these people is senior Grace Varvera. She uses Instagram to stand up for what she believes needs to be changed in the world, such as racism, transphobia and more.

“I’m not a superhero or anything for doing this and it should be normalized that people should discuss their opinions,” Varvera said.

Out of all the issues she cares about, one that Varvera shares the most is the topic of feminism. Feminism is the belief that women should be equal to men institutionally and socially. She stands up for feminism by posting resources and awareness articles about feminism and women’s rights on her story.

Senior Jack Ferry has observed how Varvera uses social media to stand up for her beliefs, and he likes how she uses social media healthily by sharing helpful posts from other sources.

“I think it’s good that she’s embracing her beliefs and conveying them in a healthy manner,” Ferry said.

Despite the many heartbreaks of 2020, such as the pandemic and division in the U.S., this year has given teens like Varvera a voice in social issues and promoted openness and expression.

“This year has been a lot of craziness and there are really important things that need awareness,” Varvera said. “You can’t be silent forever on everything.”
