NHS hosted a book drive, where students could bring in old books: these four books were donated by a student.

In the past two weeks, FHN has hosted a book drive to donate books to local elementary, middle and high schools. This National Honor Society (NHS) sponsored event is in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday which is put on by the National Education Organization and Read Across America.

“In the past, we have sent National Honor Society students over to Henderson Elementary,” NHS sponsor Angie Mason said. “And we would have our students, juniors or seniors, sign up and pick some books and read to the classes at Henderson.”

This year due to COVID-19, NHS decided to host a book drive instead of reading to students at Henderson Elementary. These books donated will go to classrooms in the district to help students expand their love of reading.

“[For] people who still have books of their own and want to get rid of them, they can donate the books that maybe aren’t important to them but could be important to someone else,” Mason said.

NHS students were encouraged to bring in books to help support the drive and count towards their volunteer points. One such member was NHS secretary Katie McNevin.

“I think it’s nice to have the resources to read whatever you want,” McNevin said. “That’s what I love about our school: we have a pretty large library, and we have basically anything you could want. I think being able to help another school in need is really great and something I’m happy to help with.”

McNevin and fellow NHS members and sponsors worked hard to provide students with a collection of used and unused books to stock classrooms. With donations from NHS and FHN students, children in schools across the district can enjoy the new books in their classrooms.
