On Saturday, May 22nd, senior track & field thrower Aaron Okello competed at sectionals and received first place in both boys shot put and boys discus. According to Okello, he was very proud of himself in his performance at sectionals, and this season as a whole has gone very well for Okello and his teammates.

“I feel like I’ve gotten a lot stronger since the previous seasons, and it’s different in other ways because of COVID-19,” Okello said. “[We’re] not allowed to have as many meets as we usually do, and there’s the thing of wearing masks to meets and just things like that.”

This Saturday, May 29, Okello will be competing at state at Jefferson City High School and hopes to perform well and place high in both shot put and discus.

“[I] just want to make sure that I keep all my technical things that I’ve been doing in practice and translate them over into state and just throw far,” Okello said.

According to junior and fellow shot put and discus thrower Aaron Lashley, Okello is hardworking, perseverant, a strong leader and someone who always competes to the best of his ability.

“He’s always there for warm ups and helping us do things, getting organized and helps us stay motivated,” Lashley said.

Overall, Okello has thoroughly enjoyed his years as a shot put and discus thrower with FHN’s track and field team.

“[Next year] I plan on doing track and football both in college at St. Ambrose University at Iowa,” Okello said. “I really just enjoy the competition aspect. All the people push you to be better and you push them to be better, and it’s just a great atmosphere.”
