Junior Maggie Koester gives blood at the HOSA blood drive in the big gym on April 4th

On Monday April 4, HOSA hosted its annual Blood Drive. Every year, there are students that come down to the gym and volunteer their time to get their blood drawn. Each student that gives blood receives a five dollar gift card and a tree planted in their name.

“This is my second time giving blood, so I am excited that for every donation you are not just helping one person, you are helping three people,” Emma Mussleman, senior at FHN said.

You can help three people instead of one since the blood donated is used for red cells, plasma and platelets. The process of giving blood is a simple process. First, you will sign up for the blood drive. If you are 16, you need a parents permission. If you are 17 or older then you do not need a parent permission. HOSA will ask you various questions through a small health history. The process of giving blood only takes about seven to ten minutes, and then at the end, they have cookies, juice and snacks.

“The people that sign up, show up,” Terry Deters coordinator of the blood drive said. “Which means that the students did recruitment and got the word out.”

As blood drives are very beneficial the weather always is a turning factor, as Deters has had to cancel blood drives in the past because of snow and just generally bad weather. That is something that is always a worry.
