The Drama Club has their first meeting in the auditorium.

On Nov 17-19 the Drama Club will be hosting their fall play “Radium Girls”. It will be hosted in the Francis Howell North auditorium. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the play will be from 7:00-9:00 p.m. The play “Radium Girls” is based on a true story about a group of girls who painted dials during the 1920s.

“It’s a historical play of the women who used to paint the dials of the airplanes in World War 1 with radium-based paint, which is radioactive,” Kim Sulzner, the Director of Theater Arts at FHN, said. “So it caused these women health issues and it’s about their battle to be compensated.”

Auditions will be held on Sep. 29 in the auditorium for one of the possible 9-25 rolls. To audition, grab a sign-up sheet from room 57 and fill it out. Students hoping to audition have to pick and perform a 30-second monologue in front of a panel of judges. The panel will hold teachers and staff members along with the Director of Theater Arts, Sulzner. There will be a workshop to help students prepare their monologue on Sep. 27.

“[The judges] then fill out a rubric on how you did,” Vice President of the Drama Club, Clara Bonstead said. “After the judges fill out the rubrics, you get a score and the highest scoring audition gets the hardest role.”

“Radium Girls” was the second choice of the Drama Club last year and the runner up to their Spring play, “The Plot, Like Gravy, Thickens”. The Drama Club wanted to do this play because it is historical and scientific so more people might come because of their classes. Once the cast and crew lists have been released, they start rehearsing and blocking it out.

“I design the set, design the costumes and all that after reading the script practically all summer. So, by the time the students come in and audition we’re starting the rehearsal process right away,” Sulzner said.
