Students who apply to be a part of the AP class work throughout the year on building their portfolios with different mediums in the class. They then choose two of their best works to be framed and presented at the gallery. Students have the opportunity to show off to friends and family what they have been working on all year long. On occasion though, the gallery will contact them if there is an interested buyer and the students are able to set a price which can be something the students can look forward to.

Senior Leah Laurentius submitted a digital piece called Martians to the gallery and a charcoal piece called Triple Goddess that got picked as this year’s art show flier. These pieces show her main theme this year as she chose to be more fantasy orientated. Laurentius entered this class wanting to explore her skills and experiment more and hopes to go into illustration wanting to keep art as a part of her career and daily life.

The AP art and design class takes multiple mediums working with digital and non-digital art. In order to be a part of the art show you have to take the class both 1st and 2nd semester and the art show is a  requirement for the class itself. AP art and design teacher Courtney Flamm supervises and oversees the gallery alongside Francis Howell High in a collaborative gallery. Although in prior years due to COVID, students had either not had an art show available to them or were able to pick more art pieces due to them not being able to collaborate with other high schools for the risk of COVID.

“I love being around people who are also really passionate and hard-working because I haven’t been in a class like this at all,” Laurentius said.
