Beerman’s thoughts on Health Bill

healthbillbeerman32410I say this because it is something that needs to be said, and I am sick of people making poor arguments about it. I don’t care what your political stance is, the new health care bill is good.

It makes it so that college aged students have health care (and we all know that they need it), it provides that no insurance company can deny a child health care on the basis of a pre-diagnosed condition. It increases the competition that will exist between health insurance companies, effectively lowering rates for everybody. And, despite popular belief, the tax increase isn’t substantial.

I heard someone haphazardly say in the halls that there will be a 300% increase in the social benefits tax, when in reality it is only a small frction of that. And, even though I know that that is a ludicrous claim, I am also at the point where it’s like, “who cares?” I honestly wouldn’t care if they take a $100 out of my paycheck if it means that there will be health care for 6 year-olds with Leukemia. If it means that a gunshot victim can’t be denied coverage for a $75,000 life saving procedure because they didn’t get it pre-approved, then I am willing to pay it.

If the measure of our humanity is our generosity, then it certainly is the measure of our inhumanity, and my standards for the morality of the American middle class falls everyday. We can’t call ourselves the leaders of the world and the protectors of democracy if we are all so greedy that helping each other out is no longer an option. And for the argument that it is socialist, to that I say, so is public education. We all pay for it so that others can use it on our dime, but none of us have a problem with accepting that. Education, defense, and health care. All things that every person in the world should have equal access to.
