New trays unwanted by students

traysatlunchopinion4210When students came back from spring break, they were surprised to find new trays in place of the traditional Styrofoam trays that used to be available.

“I thought they were weird,” sophomore Angel Moore said. “I don’t like the new red ones, they remind me of weird fast food places.”

Although students see it as a noble attempt at being more environmentally friendly, they’re concerned with the possible health risks.

“I thought it was unsanitary, but good for the environment,” sophomore Sarah Teson said. “I am all for saving for saving the Earth, but not getting sick in the process.”

The cleaning process for the trays include a disposable wax paper, as well as a simple washing. But this poses the question as to whether or not it’s more environmentally conscience if the trays must be washed five times a day.

“I don’t think that our school alone will make a difference,” Teson said. “If all of the other schools help out, then maybe, but not us alone.”

In light of the new changes, there are also new hassles. As opposed to the traditional system of merely disposing of the tray, the new ones require that students remove all waste from their tray, then stack them on one of two carts.

“It’s just the same as the other one’s really,” Moore said. “Just more of a hassle.”
