Hut No. 8 Sells Thrifted Homecoming Dresses at a Discounted Price
Published: September 30, 2019
A problem often faced during homecoming season is finding the perfect dress. That is where Hut No. 8 comes in. Hut No. 8 is a resale store that sells everything from heels to hair-ties. But, during homecoming season, they fill their dress racks with homecoming dresses they’ve bought from people.
“It’s great for people who may be in school and have a limited budget and it helps the environment as well because you’re recycling clothing by reusing it,” said Employee Megan Buckles. “We have a very boutique-y, more of a retail store type of vibe. We like to make it feel like you’re having an actual shopping experience rather than you just picking through things nobody really likes. It gives you an experience that feels like home because all of the girls who work here are so welcoming to each other and the people that come in. It becomes its own community.”
With the search for the perfect dress comes the search for the perfect price and luckily, with Hut No. 8, there isn’t a need to settle in either category.
“I would say that there’s probably at least 300 new items added to the store everyday,” Buckles said. “[Most of our dresses are] between $20-30 but there’s nothing over $60. It is a very large variety…inclusive for everybody I would say. Everything’s only one to two years old and it’s stuff people till love and are wearing now.”
While they offer a variety of dresses, it is important to remember that they are a thrift store so finding dresses with specific qualities is not guaranteed.
“[Hut No.8 is] not really for when you are looking for something,” said Sophomore Anna Berthold. “It’s more for when you are just looking.”
However, if they don’t have that “perfect” dress, there’s still time to go back and check the racks for missed gems.
“We just stopped buying them from people,” Buckles said. “We’ll have them until all of the homcomings are over so we’ll probably have them up until the last week of October or the first week of November.”
If their dresses and prices aren’t convincing enough, they have a welcoming environment and act as a “second home” to their customers according to Buckles.
“I think my favorite thing [about this store] is seeing people fall in love with it the way I have,” Buckles said. “When people think of a resale shop they don’t think of anything special but when they come in here they really do find a second home or something they can relate to with their love of fashion and being able to afford it.”
