Gypsy
Madelyn Brewer is a freshman at FHN. She lives with her parents and brother and they have a dog named Gypsy. Gypsy is a 7-year-old mix they rescued when Madelyn was seven.
“I was in second grade,” Madelyn said. “The first day we got her, my brother had soccer practice which meant me and my mom were home alone with her. We laid on the carpet watching the animal planet together and she fell asleep.”
Over the years, Madelyn and her family have taught Gypsy all sorts of tricks. Gypsy knows Bang Bang, Roll Over, Paws Up, Sit Pretty, Leave It, Kisses, and Got My Back and they are currently working on Speak.
“Madelyn taught her everything but sit,” Madelyn’s mother, Erin Brewer said. “Sit we were encouraged to teach in case new people came into the house. But Madelyn taught her most of the others because she likes to teach her new things.”
They love Gypsy and she has become like another family member for them. Madelyn and Erin both recommend getting a pet because they enjoy having someone to talk to and having someone to come home to after a long and busy day. They do have some advice to offer though.
“Ask the pros and cons about different breeds, size, and age. Just ask lots of questions,” Erin said. “If you are ever wanting to get one, get one from a shelter if you can, you won’t have to spend as much money as if you went to a breeder and you get to give an animal a good, loving home.”
