FHN Journalism Summer Camp

SUMMER CAMP AT FHN

In an effort to keep everyone fresh and get everyone a chance to get togethers, we will be having a formal summer journalism camp at FHN for students in the program next year. This camp will not count for Honors Credit or for Nationals qualifying but you will get a jump on the school year by helping set the direction of the publications and — most importantly — meeting the great team you’ll be working with next year.

We will have a camp at FHN 5-7, 2024 (details still getting worked out with the new space). It will be editors only Aug. 5 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. All staffers and editors will have camp Aug. 6-7. The camp Aug. 6-7 will be from 8 a.m. – Noon daily. Camp will be $10 and snacks and a t-shirt will be provided.

We will have more details as we get closer. While we know summer is a busy time, we anticipate at least 70% of staffers next year to attend so it should be a great, fun group and we will work to make it a fun few days for you all. All staffers next year and anyone enrolled in a journalism class next year will be invited. The week will be focused on getting to know one another, figuring out what you all want to do this coming year and setting some goals.

The sign up form for this summer’s camp at school can be found here.

If you have any questions about summer opportunities or if you are ready to lock in a summer option from above, just reach out to Mr. Manfull and Mrs. Kiel. You can email them at:

OTHER SUMMER JOURNALISM OPPORTUNITIES

There are a variety of summer journalism camps and opportunities throughout the country each summer. There are some great opportunities out there to learn some new skills, level up on skills you already have, and meet some new, nice people. Successfully completing one can get you your Honors Credit point for a semester and make you eligible to attend National Convention opportunities if they present themselves. If you attend a paid summer camp, you can also get $100 refunded to you at the end for successful completion. This can be paid back to you from the school or applied to a National Convention trip. We will list some opportunities below here that would qualify you. If you’d like to know of others at other schools or locations or on other dates, please reach out to Mr. Manfull and Mrs. Kiel and they can help you and add opportunities below.

Media Now
Media Now is a high school training program run by Mr. Manfull and his wife, Kate. This summer, there will be three opportunities for you for training through Media Now.

  • Media Now: In-Person Overnight at Drake University – July 8-11, 2024. Mr. Manfull and Mrs. Kiel will be at this camp teaching. There will be optional bus transportation provided for individuals from the STL area attending camp. More information about this camp can be found here: https://medianow.press/drake/
  • Media Now: On-Demand Virtual Training – If you’re looking to work around a busy schedule, you can still take courses, get smarter and make yourself eligible for all the perks of hitting a camp, right from your own home. On-Demand Virtual Training through Media Now is available year-round and you can learn more here: https://medianow.press/online/

Other Workshops
Some different states have other summer journalism workshops. If students find and attend one of those, they count Honors Credit and Nationals qualification just like Media Now does.
