Jennifer Wei uses Thanksgiving to reconnect

Jennifer Wei, a sophomore at Francis Howell North, spent her Thanksgiving break a little differently than she was used to. Usually she spends her break at home with her mom’s side of the family, but this year her dad flew in from Las Vegas. Wei hadn’t seen her dad since July. She and her dad stayed with her grandparents in High Hill. There, she reconnected with her Chinese relatives whom she doesn’t get to see very often.

“It’s a little weird, considering this is the first Thanksgiving that I wasn’t with my mom,” Wei said, “But I got to spend the whole time with my Chinese family that I usually never get to see.”

For Thanksgiving Wei went to her great aunt’s house. Traditionally people eat turkey on Thanksgiving, but they ate ham instead. Wei’s favorite food was a coffee cake called tiramisu. According to Wei there was an equal amount of Chinese and American food.

“My favorite thing [on Thanksgiving] was being able to eat everything in sight,” Wei said.

On Friday Wei got up at 8 a.m. to go Black Friday shopping, and then went to see the movie Tangled with her aunt.

“It was so cute, I love that movie,” Wei said.

Saturday Wei continued shopping with her family. She received the Sony Ericsson (the Taylor Swift phone) as a gift from her dad. That night she went out to eat with her dad and some of his old friends. Wei spent most of Sunday morning packing, and she returned home in the afternoon.

“My favorite part [of break] was being able to see my dad and my aunt who don’t live around here,” Wei said.
