You know what grinds my gears? When people listen to music that betrays their beliefs.
Let me explain, just to avoid ambiguity, I’m talking about thoroughly abstinent people who sing along to “LoveGame” by Lady Gaga or devout catholics who rock out to the “Serpentine Offering” by Dimmu Borgir.
But don’t get me wrong, you can like whatever you want. I just don’t understand how that can appeal to someone with such strong beliefs.
For example:
ab·sti·nence
[ab-stuh-nihns]
–noun
Resisting any indulgence of appetite, especially from alcoholic beverages or sexual activities.
“LoveGame” (by Lady Gaga) lyrics:
Let’s have some fun, this beat is sick
I wanna take a ride on your disco stick
Let’s have some fun, this beat is sick
I wanna take a ride on your disco stick
So now I ask you, does it make sense for this song to appeal to someone who actively promotes abstinence? Personally, I love the song and there’s plenty more to love than the meaning, but you can’t ignore what the song is trying to communicate.
Here’s another example:
Ca·thol·i·cism
[kuh-thol-uh-siz-uhm]
–noun
1. the faith, system, and practice of the Catholic Church, especially the Roman Catholic Church.
“Serpentine Offering” (By: Dimmu Borgir) Lyrics:
My descent is the story of everyman
I am hatred, darkness and despair
My descent is the story of everyman
I am hatred, darkness and despair
Reconcile not with the fear of the snake
But embrace it as your own
Inject its venom into your veins
And replant the seed that gives growth
Once again, how can someone, who has a strong relationship with God, enjoy a song telling you to embrace Lucifer?
And that’s what grinds my gears.
