Closing the gate on a legacy

On Monday May 9, the series finale of the last “Stargate” series, Stargate Universe, aired its last episode for an epic series finale. The Stargate franchise has been on (including all series) for 14 straight years creating some of the best, and well written, adventures of all time.

The original Stargate movie that came out in 1994, starring Kurt Russel and James Spader, followed the adventures of Col. Jack O’neill as they went through the stargate to a planet with an Egyptian like society. From there, the original series “Stargate SG-1” was created to follow up on the storyline of why the pyramids were built, which ended up to be landing pads for an evil alien race who were viewed and based off of the Pharaohs of Egypt called the Goa’uld. By fighting aliens and saving the galaxy everyday of their lives, the team know as SG-1 was able to keep their prime spot on television for ten years, winning scrupulous amounts of awards doing so.

The spin-off series of SG-1 came later in 2004, after the season 8 cliffhanger, there was an open spot in the series story line for another series know as “Stargate Atlantis”. Atlantis follows the journey of John Shepard and his team as they find the lost city of Atlantis by connecting the stargate to a power source capable enough to establish a gate connection to another galaxy using the eighth chevron on the stargate.. As they embark on their expedition to the ancient city, it opens itself up to them as they step through the gate, due to its abandonment for thousands of years. The classic storyline unfolds as they find an enemy that the galaxy fears called the Wraith, which turns out the ancients (the race who built the stargates and human ancestors) actually had created the wraith. Fighting for freedom and the oppression from the wraith, John and his team must use Atlantis to find a way to defeat them, but by doing so find out that there is a code that can be used to activate the ninth chevron.

Where the franchise ended was with “Stargate Universe” where a team of explorers unlocked the ninth chevron during an fleeing attempt to escape a ruthless enemy, and traveled through the stargate only to find ancient mysteries that have yet to be uncovered. They are sent aboard the ancient ship named Destiny, whose true mission is not to only travel the universe, but find the source of the big bang (in the simplest terms.) The way SGU is set apart from the rest of the other two series is that it is not only dark, but it is suspenseful and gritty. Surprisingly the series ended on a good storyline that was not only touching, but also open ended for a possible movie.

In all, Stargate has always been a wonderful display how science fiction, technology, and imagination can come together to make one beautiful masterpiece.
