On Aug. 9-16 FHN graduate Devyn Brown is going to Haiti to offer disaster relief from the 7.0-magnititude earthquake that happened in January.

“I’m really nervous because they don’t have any luxuries,” Devyn said, “But I’m ready for it I think.”

The 17-year-old is going with her mother Sherrie Brown, dad James Brown and brother Tyler Brown.

“I feel loving compassion towards Devyn because she is such a loving person and would take the time out of her life to [help Haiti],” friend Isiah Gleen said.

The trip to Haiti cost the Brown family $975 a person. The cost of the trip includes such necessities as food and shelter. This trip also requires that Devyn meet certain health standards.

“You have to be healthy and make sure you have your vaccinations,” Brown said.

Health and good condition will be helpful too in Brown families work while in Haiti. Their job is to help set up and rebuild school houses. In a nation where over 100 thousand people have passed away due to the earthquake, Devyn believes it doesn’t hurt to lend a hand.

“My brother [Tyler] is a chef,” Brown said, “So he’s going to be cooking and stuff.”

Helping to rebuild and make meals in Haiti isn’t the only thing Devyn has done to help with disaster relief. Recently she helped the victims of the tornadoes in the St. Louis area. Now the family is pursuing their goal of going to Haiti and lending a helping hand.

“[I hope to] gain knowledge that I did change someone’s life for the better,” Devyn said.
