After hours of debate on the new tax levy that would allow the district to remain revenue neutral, the Francis Howell School District Board of Education decided to reissue the tax levy discussed on September 15. At this special meeting held on September 28, the board passed the tax rate from $5.18 to $5.13. The vote was 4-3. Board member Mark Lafata was one of the two board members who requested this meeting, which was then approved by Board President, Mike Sommer.

“I don’t think the board arrived at a decision that was a majority,” Lafata said.

During this meeting, many comments were made by residents and board members expressing how they feel about the tax cut.

Some board members believed that this tax cut is a good idea and will pay off in the long run.

“The district is going to be forced to give its money back,” Lafata said. “The tax crews have not approved for the rate to go forward again in 2013 and if we don’t start rearing this back, then there’s going to be a bigger pull back at a later time.”

On the other hand, some residents and board members believe that this tax reduction will harm the educational standards of Francis Howell School District and take a toll on students.

“We cannot improve the quality of education we provide for the children of this district if we voluntarily cut our own allowance.” Librarian at Barnwell Middle School Shelly Hoffmen said.

Board member Marty Hodits also believes that this is a bad idea for the District. He fears that state spending will not be what is expected, leaving the District in a bind that could set it back financially.

“Education has been stated by the top leadership in the government as number one priority we will not cut.” Hodits said. “During this time, they have cut education.”
