Anthony Hamilton – “Back To Love” (Review)

Anthony Hamilton has evaded my musical sight until recently, when I started hearing about his latest album, “Back to Love”.

Although the album is from early December, I’ve decided to check it out, considering the musical drought that is the holiday season.

Hamilton’s sound is a mix of R&B, Soul, and Disco. It’s not hard to imagine him and his music being a big hit in the mid-seventies. It’s a genre that hardly ever touches the charts or the radio these days. That fact is quite the shame. Hamilton’s voice is silky-smooth, melodic, and harmonious. The term “easy listening” has never been more appropriate.

“Woo” is the first single from the album. The song probably has the biggest disco influence of any song on the album. Elements of funk are also very prominent here. It’s very comparable to Cee Lo Green’s latest work on “The Lady Killer”.

“Never Let Go” features Keri Hilson, and shows that Hamilton’s music is even better when accompanied by another artist. Unfortunately, this is the only song to feature anyone other than himself. I can imagine a beautiful collaboration between Hamilton and Cee Lo Green. That would be something I would really like to hear.

“Mad” is a pretty different track for the soulful style of Anthony Hamilton. Harmonicas, steel guitars, and a bump and clap rhythm make it sound very similar to the likes of James Brown. The song’s rhythms are fantastic and catchy. One of the best on the album.

Anthony Hamilton’s soulful experiment “Back To Love” is something I would definitely listen to again. Though the songs become familiar and start blending together, it’s calm and easy on the ears. I can see myself putting this album on while I play some Xbox, and just relax. It’s too early to call it an amazing album, but I would definitely say that it is plenty good upon the first few listens. I give this album a 3.5 out of 5.
