Trigonometry and Alegbra teacher Patty Bartell was named the FHN Teacher of the Year on Monday. Bartell, who first received this honor in 2002, is the only educator at North to be named Teacher of the Year more than once.
“She’s an excellent teacher,” math teacher Pam Stratton said. “She’s dedicated, and people recognize that. That’s why she was nominated again.”
Because Bartell is on an extended absence, she found out about this award from a phone call from Principal Darlene Jones.
“She was speechless,” Jones said. “She was surprised but very happy.”
Teacher of the Year is nominated and voted on by teachers at North. Jones believes that Bartell received the most votes because of her excellence in the classroom.
“Patty is a very effective teacher,” Jones said. “Her student’s do well academically as well as perform at the proficient or advanced level on state tests. She is also a mentor to some younger teachers in the math department.”
Now that Bartell has been named the FHN Teacher of the Year, she is in the running for the FHSD Teacher of the Year, which is announced this spring.
“I think she should be [FHSD] Teacher of the Year because she’s really dedicated to her students,” senior Olivia Barfield said. “She’s easy to learn from.”

It would be nice to know specifically what Ms. Bartell teaches. “Math” encompasses several classes. Just a thought.
