The problem with Generation Y

Lately, I’ve seemed to notice that there is a problem with this generation of kids. They’re lazy; they always try to take the easy route; they aren’t challenging themselves. What disturbs me the most is hearing, ‘I’ll just work at McDonald’s the rest of my life,’ as a serious statement when one would normally think of that as a joke.

I wonder what’s made this generation of teenagers so apathetic.

The laziness isn’t only focused around school, either. It radiates in every part of their lives. Helping people is a hassle rather than a reflex. Volunteering is a waste of time. People would rather party now than prepare for later.

The teenagers now have more potential and more opportunities than any other generation before and it’s being put to waste. With more ways to connect, communicate, network, and learn than there ever has been, one would expect the greatest things to emerge from ‘Generation Y.’

Don’t get me wrong, there are some teenagers who have worked strenuously to succeed and it has paid off; however, there are some kids who have helped their community and done great things but it was only to add to their resume. So what’s worse? Apathy or boasting?

The problem with this generation is that while we’re constantly around people in some form, we don’t truly care about them; and that honestly challenging ourselves to be the top is a waste of time, since we’re all going to die this December anyway. Right?

Love and Nargles,

Alex
