Van Halen – A Different Kind of Truth (Review)

Here in the 00’s, many 70’s and 80’s  hard rock bands have made a comeback with a new album. Aerosmith, Kiss, and Iron Maiden have all done this. Now, it’s Van Halen’s turn. For the most part, I’ve enjoyed these comeback albums. Maybe “A Different Kind of Truth” will accomplish this same feat.

“Tattoo” was released as a single last month. It’s probably the perfect introductory track to this new VH sound. First off, David Lee Roth sounds pretty good. Considering he’s 56, his former glory still remains in that voice of his. Just as Roth has maintained his voice, Eddie Van Halen’s guitar riffs still sound fantastic. Especially on this track, the riffs are catchy and heavy. A great track, right here.

“You and Your Blues” has received some critical acclaim, but I really don’t get it. The track’s chorus leaves something to be desired, and the verses are some kind of pop-infused tragedy.

“Blood and Fire” is interesting. It’s both melodic ballad, and heavy rock, reminiscent of a more poppy Rush song. This track definitely adds another flavor to the mix of things that make up this album.

“As Is” is a fast, double kicked, thrashing rock song. Eddie’s speedy plucks and Roth’s deep vocals are meant to be together, and this track proves that statement. Overall, a really solid track.

So, I must say that Van Halen has impressed me. Most of their stuff has never appealed to me, but this reincarnated sound is surprising. It’s high-energy rock, just how I like it. This album gets a 3.5 out of 5.
