Plans under way for Black History Month

Black History month is here once again and new ideas have been forming to make this month as memorable as possible, but the timing couldn’t be more off. During this time of year it is the busiest for Sponsor Mary Kerr-Grant due to student registration.

“It’s better then last year, but things are not how I wanted them to be in the first month,” Co-sponsor Dana Maxson said. “It’s definitely better then last year, but improvements could be made.”

The actives this year for Black History Month are pushing towards a media centered reach to the students of FHN; plans for a video of Mr. Turner describing his involvements with civil rights movements at his high school and life after highschool are under way.

“It’s a learning experience, and that’s what the video was designed to do,” Leroy Turner said. “I really think students will learn something from it because, as African Americans, we were really restricted.”

Along with a video featuring Turner, students came up with the idea of a trivia game, hanging up posters, and displaying facts on Black History Month in the Library. There has also been talk of students in Youth and Government joining to help  African American Leaders.

“This is the first year we’ve done this because typically nothing really goes on, and the students thought that it was important to do something,” Sponsor of Youth and Government Kathy Chostner said.

Though there is a lot to be done this year there is more pressure then ever to deliver a message.

“I just think youngsters need to know how it was back in those days,” Turner said.
