Juniors Aurora Blanchard, Smitha Milli, and Liz Leonard all got accepted to Girls State, which will be held on June 24-30. It will be held at UCM (University of Central Missouri). The girls were ecstatic after finding out they all got accepted.

“When I found out I got accepted I felt like there was this huge jolt of electricity throughout my body,” Blanchard said.

All girls have different emotions about getting accepted but all are very excited and thankful to be given this opportunity. They all are looking forward to the summer ahead.

“The interview was so relaxed,” Milli said. “The lady was so sweet and nice there was no way anyone could be nervous.”

All girls hope to learn something different and become better leaders in the process.

“I want to learn more about self government and how to become a better leader,” Leonard said.

To get accepted, teachers nominated a student they thought deserved to go to the camp. After teachers picked, they narrowed it down to the three juniors. Then all three went on to the interview process. After a five-hour interview process, the girls found out they were all chosen.

Girls State Camp originally started out as a Boys State camp, and the girls were later added. It was established in 1940 as one of the 11 Girls State programs in the nation. They have 760 citizens in 7 counties and 21 cities. Their cities are named after famous or important people in history.
