Gandhi once said “Be the change you wished to see in the world”.

This is the motto the World Changing Girls (WCG) have lived up to. WCG is an organization of highschool girls who raise money for various charities through coming together to reach out to those less fortunate then themselves.

“The group has taught me that even just a small organization can make a difference,”  member Allison Lewis said.

The group raised a total of 2,441 dollars since it came together in 2007. The girls are continuing to raise for this year’s charity of choice- USO- an organization that supports the troops coming back from the war.

WCG was founded by sophomore Melissa Lukes. With the intention of starting a club with her friends, Lukes’ idea branched into getting her friends together every Tuesday night, making a variety of crafts, and selling them at local craft fairs to raise money to send out to different charities.

“We just try to help people out the best we can because we know that not everyone has the same advantages as we do,” Lukes said.

The girls even pay for their table at the craft fairs with their own money. Another way they reach out- in a small but special way- is through a talent show put on once a year for senior citizens and disabled children.

“When we perform for them you can just tell by the smile on their faces that they are thankful,” Lukes said.

The group has lost and gained members throughout the years. But they are still very close-knit.

“The group has definitely got us closer,” member Hannah Rosen said. “It gives us a chance to spend time together and catch up.”
