Mac Miller’s latest tape is a good start

“Inspired by Love, Drugs, and the search for Euphoria,”, reads the back cover of Macadelic.

Love? Maybe. Drugs? Definitely. The search for Euphoria? Well, that’s just Mac’s way of saying “more drugs”.

Macadelic is Mac Miller’s latest mixtape, released for free last month. Now,  on this tape, he’s trying to be intellectual, artistic, and other things that he really isn’t. For some, that’ll really get on their nerves, but if you’re willing to give the music a chance, you might find something special. His brand of Hip-Hop is relaxing, non-confrontational, and entertaining. This release flaunts that more than ever.

“Loud” is a great, chilled, song. The hook is catchy, and his flow is in the right place. The production is stellar up until the end when a non-sequitur sample suddenly rings through your speakers. This one of those instances where Mac or the producer were trying to be artistic or something, but luckily, it’s only a few seconds of that.

“Thoughts from A Balcony” is reminiscent of a Rolling Papers era Wiz Khalifa. It’s mellow but uplifting and is filled with lyrics about living the high life.

“The Mourning After” is the most low-key and drug influenced track on the album. It’s also probably got some of Mac’s best verses on the album.

“Ignorant” is a lot more like a typical rap club hit. This track has a much bigger production and a dual chorus between Mac and Cam’ron. It’s solid, but not a stand out track.

“The Question” continues the common Mac theme of hazy, mellowed beats that are just plain relaxing. The track features Lil’ Wayne, who, has really been out of the game recently. Tha Carter IV completely tanked, and he hasn’t really released anything since then. His verse is pretty run-of-the-mill a part from his voice sounding a little higher.

Most of the songs on this album follow the same formula. They’re slow, chilled out, and heavy drug use is evident. Apart from “Loud” and “Thoughts from A Balcony” there’s not much i’ll take away from this tape, but it proved to me that Mac Miller really deserves a lot less of the hate he gets. For Macadelic, a three out of five stars.
