FHN and FHC turf fields to be completed summer of 2013

In Nov. 2008, a $78.5 million bond issue was approved by voters for FHSD. Now, with $11.1 million remaining, FHSD is coming down to the last six projects they will be able to fund with this bond issue, the final one being turf fields for FHN and FHC. These projects were discussed at the April 5 FHSD Board of Education meeting.

“I definitely support turf fields, but I believe we hire the superintendant and financial team to decide when those purchases will be best,” Director Eric Seider said.

Administration created a list of projects in order of what they deemed the most important. The first three are HVAC renovations for Fairmount Elementary and Barnwell Middle and the already-started new FHHS athletic complex. Those are to be completed by the summer of 2012.

Turf fields for FHN and FHC have been a hot topic with the Board, so Director Mike Hoehn motioned to move their completion up from last place to being done with the HVAC for Barnwell and Fairmount summer of 2012. This motion failed 5-2.

“I just want to caution the Board, we should think through our motions and think through our decisions,” Director Mike Sommer said when the motion failed.

With a mere $3.5 million left after the first three projected costs, FHSD would also like to complete three more projects, including the turf fields. These projects are to be completed by the summer of 2013.

Hoehn, however, believes all six projects should be completed by the end of summer of 2012 and dip into the District’s $40 million surplus if they should run short on funds. Still, all projects are to be completed as originally scheduled.

“Having money sitting in a bank doesn’t help student achievement in any way,” Hoehn said.
